BUSTLING FOOD MARKET FITTED WITH RECLAIMED JUNCKERS FLOOR

Another reclaimed Junckers floor has found a new home, this time at Mackie Mayor’s new Manchester food hall. A perfect partner for the characterful interior of the Grade II listed building, the reused beech floor adds a rustic, industrial look and is also a forgiving surface in a busy food area.

The beech floor was sourced and supplied by specialist company Hargreaves Reclaimed Flooring with the help of Junckers’ Reuse Scheme. Junckers connects with flooring contractors who specialise in reclaiming wood flooring by providing details of projects where an old floor needs lifting, as well as acting as liaison between contractors sourcing a floor which can be repurposed.

The 22 mm thick solid beech floor is one of the more hardwearing and long-lasting flooring options available. Even as a reclaimed floor, it has a long lifecycle and can be sanded and refinished multiple times. For this project, the client and designer opted to keep the line markings intact, which adds individuality and character to the impressive interior with its huge, vaulted glass ceiling, ornate wrought iron columns, and grand mezzanine level.

Designed by Muse Places working alongside specialist conservation architects Buttress and fit-out company Dawnvale Group, the historic building which was officially opened by Mayor Mackie 1858 as a fresh produce hall. The building had been left empty since 1974 when the city’s fresh food market was moved to East Manchester; the design team had to contend with years of neglect and decline. The vision to turn the building into a bustling hub once again while preserving its history has been a huge success – Mackie Mayor is the latest social gathering spot, a food hub of mixed vendors reflecting the city’s rich cultural heritage.
