A DURABLE HARDWOOD FLOOR FOR A LANDMARK MUSEUM

The Smithsonian National Building Museum is dedicated to exploring architecture, design, and the built environment, welcoming visitors from around the world. As a high-profile public institution with extensive daily foot traffic, the choice of flooring was critical in ensuring both aesthetic quality and long-term durability.

A total of 465 m² of hardwood flooring was installed throughout key exhibition areas, creating a consistent and cohesive foundation for the museum’s interior spaces.

Natural oak with a Nordic expression

The project features a 15 mm solid oak plank floor in Nordic White Plus. The light, natural tone of the oak enhances the architectural character of the museum, adding warmth and balance to the dark wall surfaces and graphic exhibition elements.

The Nordic White plus finish provides a contemporary yet timeless appearance, allowing the exhibitions to stand out while maintaining a calm and inviting atmosphere for visitors.

Designed for public spaces with heavy foot traffic

In a high-traffic public environment such as the National Building Museum, the floor must withstand constant footfall while maintaining its appearance over time. The solid hardwood provides exceptional strength and stability, making it well suited for museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions.

The robust surface allows for easy maintenance and long service life, ensuring that the floor continues to perform aesthetically and functionally despite daily wear from visitors, temporary installations, and exhibition changes.

A long-lasting and responsible flooring solution

The use of solid wood supports a long-term approach to sustainability. Oak is a renewable material, and the floor can be renovated over time, extending its lifespan and reducing the need for replacement. This makes the flooring solution both environmentally responsible and economically sound.
