For the BBC’s new, purpose built auditorium in Cardiff specifying architects, Capita, required a floor with outstanding acoustics performance.

The installation by Junckers includes two rehearsal studios – Hoddinott Hall and the Grace Williams Studio, plus four rehearsal rooms. The building forms the new home for the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales. Hoddinott Hall has been designed to meet the high requirements of the orchestra when conducting concerts, rehearsals and recording sessions.

Junckers installed 865 m² of the latest technology acoustic performance flooring. The solution was to supply a bespoke, raised timber floor supported on a concrete sub floor.

Acoustically, this required a thick solid hardwood floor comprised of Harmony grade European Oak, secret-nailed to an WBP plywood substrate. This was supported by softwood battens/joists spaced closely together, preventing any squeaking and creaking.
